If a School Counseling or Clinical Mental Health Counseling student is seeking to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), the student must submit a completed application packet to The Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors: (https://www.bhec.texas.gov/texas-state-board-of-examiners-of-professional-counselors/index.html), 333 Guadalupe St., Tower 3, Room 900, Austin, Texas 78701, (512)305-7700. The state currently requires the completion of a 60-semester-hour graduate program and 3,000 hours of supervised counseling experience post-graduation. Students who completed the School Counseling degree (48 semester hours) are required to meet the 60-semester hour degree rule and address deficits in educational content areas through additional coursework to be eligible for LPC in Texas. Additional coursework includes COUN 530: Ethical Legal, and Professional Issues in Clinical Mental Health Counseling; COUN 535: Psychopharmacology in Clinical Mental Health Counseling: COUN 540: Diagnosis & Treatment Planning for Clinical Mental Health Counselors; COUN 552: Internship; COUN 564: Individual and Family Crisis and Resources; COUN 581: Addictions Counseling; and COUN 611: Introduction to Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy or COUN 513: Communication In Marriage. In addition, applicants must pass the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) administered by the NBCC, and the Texas Jurisprudence Exam.
